Identify the selected destination
Ask whether sound disappeared after using a headset, monitor or dock. List the output selected by Windows and the output selected inside the failing app. Microsoft’s audio guidance includes verifying the intended playback device; a connected monitor can complicate the description.
Compare one controlled sample
Play a non-private audio sample at a sensible level. Compare built-in speakers and a known-compatible external output where available. Note whether system sounds and the original app behave differently. Do not replace speakers based on an app that was muted or routed elsewhere.
Return a precise result
If supported configuration checks do not restore sound, record device detection and any error for service. Keep software changes documented and use official driver sources. After work, repeat the original sample and verify the owner’s normal output arrangement rather than leaving a temporary headset selected.
Audio changed after a dock was connected
Record whether the dock or attached display became the selected destination. If restoring the laptop speakers restores playback, verify the owner’s normal arrangement. The connection history explains why a routing check should precede a speaker replacement.
Your practice record
- Selected system and app outputs
- System sound versus media sample
- Internal versus external result
- Normal routing restored
