Capture the complaint in the owner’s words
Ask what the device does, when the symptom began and what changed beforehand. Record whether the fault is constant or intermittent and which conditions reproduce it. Keep the owner’s description separate from the technician’s initial hypothesis.
Identify the device accurately and document visible condition with permission. Note included accessories and any function that cannot be checked at intake. An inaccessible device should not be recorded as fully tested merely because its exterior looks normal.
Agree on the permitted work
State the initial scope: assessment, a specific approved operation or a quotation before further work. Explain how additional findings will be communicated. A clear intake record prevents a diagnostic suggestion from being mistaken for authorization to replace parts.
Record the contact method and data priorities using only the information needed for the job. Do not put customer identifiers into a public training portfolio. If photographs will be used for teaching or promotion, obtain separate permission for that use.
Keep access under the owner’s control
Apple’s preparation guidance says not to give others an Apple Account password or device passcode. Where access is needed for a supported service step, follow the manufacturer’s process and involve the owner appropriately. Chip Craft is not presented here as an Apple-authorized service provider.
Explain any proposed operation that may affect stored data before it begins. Ask about backup status without claiming that repair can guarantee recovery. Avoid recording passwords or recovery keys in a job sheet or exchanging them through informal messages.
Use the record again at handover
Repeat the checks agreed at intake, document the work actually completed and identify any remaining limitation. Compare the original complaint with the final result. If an intermittent issue could not be reproduced, say so rather than recording a confirmed fix.
For students, a fictional or consented training intake is a useful exercise. It develops observation and communication alongside technical work. The record should make it possible for another person to understand what was requested, permitted, tested and returned.

Repair procedures involve heat, electricity, fragile parts and customer data. Practise under qualified supervision and work only on devices you are authorized to service.
