Confirm that the display can produce sound
Check whether the monitor or television actually has speakers or a supported audio output. An HDMI connection does not create speakers where none are installed. Note any separate soundbar or headphone connection in the normal setup.
Follow the selected output
Microsoft recommends verifying the playback destination when troubleshooting Windows audio. Record the system output and app output while a harmless sample plays. Compare with the laptop’s own speakers, avoiding a large volume jump when switching between devices.
Return the normal setup
If selecting the intended endpoint restores playback, document the configuration rather than calling it a repaired HDMI port. If the display remains silent, consult its own audio instructions and test a compatible source if permitted. Leave the owner’s preferred output selected and distinguish picture, connection and audio results in the record.
The monitor has no built-in speakers
A correct image on that monitor cannot produce audible sound from absent speakers. Confirm an appropriate audio destination in the normal setup. The next decision is about supported output equipment and routing, not a speculative HDMI repair.
Your practice record
- Display has speakers or audio output
- System and app endpoints
- Display volume and mute
- Owner’s normal route restored
