Identify what the device should do
Record whether the accessory is a keyboard, storage device, camera or another peripheral. Note the exact message and whether a hub or dock is involved. A charging light does not establish that the intended USB data function is working.
Change one permitted connection
Microsoft’s input-device guidance includes direct connection and alternative-port checks. Use these only where the accessory and laptop support them. A known-working comparison peripheral helps narrow the path, but do not expose an unknown customer storage device to unrelated computers without permission.
Protect stored information
If Windows asks to initialise or format a drive, stop and discuss the data priority. Detection and file access are separate issues. Repeated insertions will not resolve visible port damage. Document the tested port, cable and accessory before escalating so the next technician does not repeat the same assumptions.
A storage device triggers a format prompt
Do not select format merely to test whether the USB port works. Ask about the data and agree on preservation priorities. A different permitted peripheral can help investigate the port without erasing the original drive.
Your practice record
- Accessory type and exact error
- Direct versus hub path
- Known-compatible comparison
- No unapproved formatting
