Write down the complete connection
A useful charging report names the laptop model, charger, cable, port and any dock between them. 'USB-C charger' is not enough detail. Record whether the laptop reports slow charging, loses battery percentage during use or refuses to charge at all. These symptoms should not be treated as interchangeable.
Microsoft identifies charger compatibility, power requirements, cable capability and the chosen port as relevant checks. Use the laptop maker's requirements for the exact model. The same connector shape does not establish that a charger and cable can supply what the computer expects.
Compare a supported direct connection
Where the manufacturer's instructions permit it, compare the reported setup with the specified charger and cable connected directly to the appropriate charging port. Record whether a dock or hub was present in the failing arrangement. Make the comparison without repeatedly forcing a loose or damaged connector.
The result should be specific: 'slow-charge warning appears with this dock but not with the supported direct connection'. That observation is useful even if the eventual explanation involves the dock's own power requirements or capabilities. It is stronger than concluding that the laptop battery must be defective.
Include the workload in the test
A computer running a demanding task can show a different battery trend from the same machine sitting idle. Note the workload, starting charge and observation period. Avoid judging the entire system from a percentage that did not change during a short, uncontrolled demonstration.
Keep the test consistent when changing equipment. If the charger, cable, dock and workload all change together, you lose the ability to identify which condition affected the result. Also document any temperature warning or manufacturer power message instead of dismissing it as an inconvenience.
Escalate with a clear evidence record
If a supported setup still fails, bring the equipment identifiers and observations to a qualified technician. A port that is visibly damaged, unusually hot or intermittent needs assessment rather than a stronger adapter or pressure on the plug. Internal measurements depend on the exact motherboard and service procedure.
For a repair student, the key skill is tracing the question through the whole power chain. Verify the complaint under the original conditions after any repair, and document what has and has not been tested. Charging once at the workshop does not resolve a dock-specific or workload-specific complaint.
