Describe the missing function
Check whether the pointer moves, physical clicks work and gestures respond. These can fail separately. Record whether an external mouse is connected and whether the behaviour began after an update or a physical incident. Avoid opening the laptop simply because one gesture is unavailable.
Use the supported software route
Microsoft documents driver-related touchpad troubleshooting through Windows Update and Device Manager. Follow the instructions for the installed system and exact model. Record the identified device and any error before changing a driver, so the initial evidence is not lost.
Recognise a mechanical warning
A raised or distorted touchpad needs assessment rather than stronger clicking. Stop using a visibly swollen or damaged device and arrange qualified handling. If ordinary supported checks fail, hand over the pointer, gesture and click observations separately; “touchpad dead” is too broad to guide a careful diagnosis.
Pointer movement works but clicks do not
Record the two functions separately and inspect for mechanical distortion without applying extra force. A software pointer response does not establish that the click mechanism is healthy. The distinction helps the next technician choose an appropriate assessment.
Your practice record
- Pointer, clicks and gestures separated
- Device detection and error
- Recent update or damage
- Any bulging or distortion noted
