Watch the startup sequence
A power light is one observation, not proof that a laptop completed startup. Record whether a logo appears, whether there are repeating lights or beeps, and whether the screen goes dark before or after the operating system begins loading. Note what the owner saw before the visit as well as what you reproduce.
Dell separates startup complaints into no power, no POST, no boot and no video. Those categories help organise a diagnosis, but the correct interpretation of a light pattern or diagnostic code still depends on the model's documentation. Do not borrow a code table from an unrelated laptop.
Use non-invasive comparisons
Check ordinary brightness and display-selection settings only where the computer's state and manufacturer instructions make that appropriate. If an external display comparison is supported, document the connection and the output observed. A successful external picture narrows the question without identifying a particular internal part by itself.
Describe exactly what is visible. A dim image, a manufacturer logo that freezes, and a blank screen after login are different observations. Avoid folding them into one 'dead motherboard' diagnosis just because the customer used the word dead.
Keep storage and firmware changes out of guesswork
A black screen does not automatically justify reinstalling Windows, resetting firmware or replacing storage. These actions can change data, boot settings or access conditions while leaving a display problem untouched. Establish the failing stage and the owner's data priorities first.
If the problem followed a memory upgrade, firmware change or previous repair, include that history in the assessment. A qualified technician can then compare the configuration with the model's requirements. Opening the case and repeatedly reseating parts without a plan can introduce another fault.
Verify startup and the intended display path
After service, check the complete path relevant to the complaint: startup, visible output, restart and the display arrangement the owner uses. If a dock or external screen was part of the reported failure, an internal-screen-only test does not reproduce that situation.
A strong learning record shows the point at which the sequence failed, the evidence used to narrow the problem and the final comparison. Keep private desktop content out of screenshots. State any remaining uncertainty rather than presenting a brief successful boot as proof of long-term stability.
