Confirm the intended input
A laptop may have a built-in microphone and additional inputs from a headset or webcam. Identify which one the app is using. Check a physical mute control if present and ask whether the failure affects every app or a single meeting application.
Use a permitted test recording
Microsoft describes microphone permissions and input testing in Windows. Have the owner approve the relevant access and record a harmless phrase. Keep the selected input and playback output documented, because a recording may be present even when the chosen speaker is silent.
Protect privacy while escalating
Delete a temporary test recording according to the owner’s preference and workshop policy. Do not retain meeting audio for diagnosis. If input remains unavailable, record system detection, driver information and the exact permission state for qualified support; these facts are more useful than a guess that the microphone module failed.
An external webcam contributes a microphone
If the meeting app selects the webcam input while the owner speaks near the laptop, identify that selection before changing drivers. Compare an approved recording with the intended input selected. Retain only the non-private test evidence needed for the job.
Your practice record
- Input selected in system and app
- Mute and permissions checked
- Recording test result
- Temporary recording handled as agreed
