Intermittent Repair Faults: Keep a Trigger Log

Collect useful conditions without forcing the device to fail.

01

Replace vague frequency with observations

Ask whether the issue appears daily, during a particular task or after a state change. Record a few real occurrences with approximate time and context. Avoid a fabricated precision such as “always after ten minutes” when the owner only remembers it happening occasionally.

02

Use a compact event format

For each event, record the task, power state, accessories, visible message and what restored normal operation. Keep private activity out of the record. An example can say “video playback” without naming the owner’s account or copying their media.

03

Test only justified conditions

Choose a safe, supported comparison with qualified supervision. Do not twist, heat or repeatedly power-cycle the device to produce a convincing failure. If the fault does not recur, report the test conditions and limitation. A non-reproduction is useful evidence, but it is not proof that the original complaint was imaginary or resolved.

04

A fault appears only with one accessory

Retain the accessory identity and the exact condition. An observation without that context may be hard to reproduce later. Test only supported comparisons and avoid calling the accessory defective until the evidence separates compatibility, connection and device factors.

05

Your practice record

  • Event and approximate time
  • Task, power and accessories
  • Recovery action
  • Non-reproduction limits
