Draw the connection path
Write down the laptop port, adapter or dock, cable and selected monitor input. Include the monitor model and whether the arrangement previously worked. An illuminated display with a no-signal message establishes power at the display, not successful video transmission.
Check supported output and settings
Microsoft’s external-monitor guidance includes display-mode and hardware comparisons. Confirm that each port and adapter supports the intended video function. Use a direct compatible connection where practical, changing one part at a time rather than replacing the whole chain.
Test the original arrangement again
If a comparison restores the image, record which component changed and retest the original condition where safe. Avoid claiming a damaged graphics chip from a failed adapter. Check the expected resolution and ordinary use after restoration; a single startup image is an incomplete display handover.
The direct connection works without the dock
Record the working direct path and the failing dock path, including cable and selected input. The comparison directs attention to the changed chain. It does not prove which element inside the dock arrangement is responsible.
Your practice record
- Monitor input and full path
- Supported port and adapter function
- Display mode
- Changed part and repeat result
