Write down the observed connection
Does the phone charge, show a USB notification or appear on the computer? Record the cable and port used, including any hub. Charging alone is an incomplete test of the data connection. Do not assume that a physical connector proves every function is supported.
Use the owner-controlled transfer mode
Google’s transfer guidance includes unlocking the device and selecting File Transfer for a supported USB connection. Let the owner authorize access. Compare a known-compatible data cable or direct computer port if appropriate, keeping each result separate.
Verify a small permitted sample
Transfer a non-sensitive test file and open it at the destination. Confirm both detection and successful copying before moving a large collection. Do not enable developer debugging or install remote-access software merely to make an ordinary transfer work. Stop if the port is damaged or unusually hot.
Charging works but the computer sees nothing
Confirm the supported transfer mode and data-capable connection before discussing the port’s internal circuitry. If a compatible cable changes computer detection, retain both results. Charging success alone did not test the same function as file transfer.
Your practice record
- Phone notification and computer detection
- Cable supports the intended transfer
- Owner approves access
- Test file opens at destination
