Confirm the preceding state
Ask whether the laptop was asleep, hibernating, shut down or simply displaying a black screen. Record how it entered that state: closing the lid, a menu command or an automatic timer. The owner’s description may not match the system’s actual power state.
Record signs before forcing a restart
Note indicator lights, sounds, external display behaviour and response to the manufacturer’s supported wake controls. Avoid opening the chassis or repeatedly interrupting power while unsaved work may remain. Use the exact model’s support instructions for recovery.
Compare a controlled transition
After normal operation is restored, test the agreed sleep-and-wake path with non-private work saved. Note docks and external screens. A successful cold boot does not establish that resume is fixed. Hand over the transition record and any system messages if the failure persists; do not treat every black screen as the same fault.
Cold startup succeeds while resume fails
Keep these as separate test outcomes. The working cold start is useful, but it does not establish that the sleep complaint is fixed. Document the exact transition, accessories and supported recovery used when the issue occurred.
