Identify the interface before the cable
UART-style serial communication and USB are different interfaces. An adapter may bridge particular systems, but a cable cannot be selected from pin count or connector appearance alone. Start with the equipment’s documented interface and electrical requirements.
List the communication assumptions
In a paper exercise, identify transmit, receive, reference, logic level and the communication settings required by the supported equipment. SparkFun explains that serial settings must match. Keep electrical compatibility and communication configuration as two separate checks.
Do not probe unknown service pads
Unlabelled board pads are not an invitation to connect a USB-to-serial adapter. Incorrect connections can damage equipment or expose private information. Use authorized training hardware and a qualified instructor’s setup. Success means explaining why the complete arrangement is compatible, not merely producing unreadable characters in a terminal.
Unreadable terminal output appears
Check the documented settings and electrical compatibility rather than trying random wiring. Unreadable output does not prove a working diagnostic interface. A permitted training example should make the matching assumptions visible before a connection is attempted.
