Start with a controlled handling area
An exposed circuit board needs an appropriate handling environment. Switching a device off addresses one concern, but it does not by itself establish protection against electrostatic discharge. EOS/ESD Association guidance describes a coordinated control system involving people, work surfaces and equipment.
For a beginner, the useful question is whether the training bench has a documented setup and someone who can explain its checks. A mat purchased online is only one component. Its appearance cannot establish that the complete arrangement is suitable.
Ask how the equipment is verified
Ask the instructor which items require checking, how often checks are performed and where failed equipment is put. Training and auditing are part of maintaining an ESD programme; equipment should not be assumed effective indefinitely because it was once installed.
Use an approved setup according to its instructions. Grounding arrangements and electrical safety need qualified oversight. Do not improvise connections to sockets, plumbing or unknown metalwork, or copy a wiring arrangement from a photograph.
Make handling habits repeatable
Prepare a clear place for the device, removed assemblies and fasteners before opening it. Keep packaging and loose objects from spreading across the controlled work area. Establish how parts will be stored when the exercise pauses or moves to another bench.
The instructor should demonstrate the local handling procedure and correct it during practice. A useful learning record notes what equipment was checked, what handling mistake occurred and how the procedure changed. This makes bench discipline observable.
Include the setup in every exercise
Before practical work, confirm authorization, the device-specific power isolation procedure and the bench checks relevant to the task. These are separate decisions; an ESD setup does not make live electrical work safe or remove battery hazards.
Students comparing courses can ask to see the preparation routine before a demonstration. Being able to explain why each check exists is a stronger learning goal than memorising the names of accessories.
