Understand the basic role
A capacitor stores electrical energy and can serve different functions depending on its circuit position. Recognising a small rectangular component is only an identification clue. The schematic and component information are needed to establish its intended value and role.
Build an identification exercise
On an unpowered training board prepared by an instructor, locate several marked capacitor positions using the matching diagram. Record their reference designators and connected nets. Do not assume that parts with the same body size have identical capacitance, rating or construction.
Keep testing claims limited
Appearance alone cannot certify every capacitor, and an in-circuit reading may include other paths. Let the instructor choose the appropriate test and preparation method. Stored energy and device-specific handling matter. Do not bridge a capacitor with a tool or remove neighbouring parts at random to pursue a guessed short.
Similar bodies, different documented values
If two capacitor positions look identical but the matching diagram specifies different values, retain the distinction. A visual parts bin is insufficient for selecting a substitute. The exercise should make students consult the specification rather than guess from size.
